Ask Heritage tells Truth About Pork Bill

As President Obama settles into his new office, it is imperative that we encourage him and Congress to exercise prudence when attempting to rescue the economy.
(The above is a statement from  The Heritage Foundation web site. Read more from HF below.)
Massive deficit spending will only throw our country further into economic shambles, as the current stimulus and SCHIP bills do little more than increase our debt and healthcare costs. Consider the following issues with the "stimulus" bill:
The $825 billion bill would dump $10,520 of new debt per household into the laps of our children and grandchildren. The interest on this debt ($347 billion) will dump even more.
Under the stimulus, new groups of children and adults would be eligible for Medicaid, the welfare program for the poor. These expansions are on top of spending $89 billion to bailout out failing state Medicaid programs.
The current "stimulus" bill will be the largest spending bill ever enacted by Congress, making the New Deal look small, accounting for inflation.
The bill is full of wasteful spending, including $21 million on new sod for the National Mall in Washington, $600 million on cars for government bureaucrats, and $650 million for digital television converters.

Super Bowl Picks

This Sunday is  Super Bowl XLIII  where  the Pittsburgh Steelers and Arizona Cardinals will play. Most say go with Pittsburgh and I know also not to bet against them in the Super Bowl however since I have made a fun bet not for money with a kid at work. The bet was that Pittsburgh will not win by more than six. I believe if the Steelers win it will be by five or less. However for this blog I am going to take the Arizona Cardinals. I love their quarterback.

Have fun watching the game and may the best team win. Also may God have honor brought to Him, and may honor be brought to the sport.

A REPUBLICAN CHAIRMAN

The Republican Party chose the first black national chairman in its history Friday, just shy of three months after the nation elected a Democrat as the first African-American president. The choice marked no less than "the dawn of a new party," declared the new GOP chairman, former Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele. Republicans chose Steele over four other candidates, including former President George W. Bush's hand-picked GOP chief, who bowed out declaring, "Obviously the winds of change are blowing." (  A REPUBLICAN CHAIRMAN )

Steele, an attorney, is a conservative, but he was considered the most moderate of the five candidates running.

He was also considered an outsider because he's not a member of the Republican National Committee. But the 168-member RNC clearly signaled it wanted a change after eight years of Bush largely dictating its every move as the party's standard-bearer.

(I believe Steele will give the GOP what it needs far as showing people of different races, cultures can be part of the GOP while holding on to the old values that have made many vote  GOP.)

Bishop who denied Holocaust apologizes to pope

A bishop recently rehabilitated by Pope Benedict XVI expressed regret Friday to the pontiff for the "distress and problems" he caused by denying the Holocaust.  ( Bishop who denied Holocaust apologizes to pope...    )
In a letter to the Vatican, Bishop Richard Williamson, who recently denied in a TV interview that 6 million Jews were murdered during the Holocaust, called his remarks "imprudent."
The letter was posted on Williamson's personal blog and addressed to Cardinal Dario Castrillon Hoyos, who has been dealing with the rehabilitation of Williamson and other renegade bishops who had been excommunicated.
The Holocaust denial had outraged Jewish groups and many others. It was not immediately clear if Williamson's letter, which contained no apology for the content of his remarks, would ease that anger.

(Ok he has told the Pope he is sorry but is it true sorrow. I don't know this man's heart but if he does have true sorrow why has he not said he was wrong for what he  said. What about telling Jewish people he was wrong,  who had love ones murdered by that killer Hitler.)

Pelosi Claims She's 'Nonpartisan'

With the focus on the economic stimulus package shifting to the Senate, the partisan split evident with the Democrat-only passage of the bill in the House last night overshadowed a lot of the discussions on both sides of the aisle today. So much so that various leaders were practically disowning the word bipartisanship as if deadly germs were part of its etymology.  (  Pelosi Claims She's 'Nonpartisan'...     )

At a news conference earlier today, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi defended the Democrat-only passage of the economic stimulus package, contending that Republicans were indeed included; their suggestions on tax cuts had become part of the bill itself, she said. But several G.O.P. senators and representatives hit the airwaves today, criticizing the spending portions and promoting their view of a more palatable alternative — bigger, broader tax cuts and incentives.

When Mrs. Pelosi was asked whether the vote — 244 to 188 without a single Republican’s approval — represented a failure on her part to advance President Obama’s desire for a broad bipartisan bill, she practically snapped:

“I didn’t come here to be partisan. I didn’t come here to be bipartisan. I came here, as did my colleagues, to be nonpartisan, to work for the American people, to do what is in their interest.

(This would be funny if it wasn't so true. The House Speaker claims she is not partism. Give me a break. She is part of the radical left who never gave Bush a chance. Did the Democrats try to work with those on the right who were not supporting this bill. I thought Obama promised a different way of doing things.)

Republican senators vow to resist Obama stimulus plan

Angry Republican senators vowed Thursday to put up a fight against President Barack Obama's economic stimulus bill after the package passed the House of Representatives with no opposition support. (Republican senators vow to resist Obama stimulus plan)

The senators denied they were indulging in political games against Obama, insisting that the 819-billion-dollar stimulus bill would prove a colossal waste of money without a greater emphasis on tax cuts and targeted investment.

"This isn't about playing the game, this is about doing something good for the American people," Republican Jon Kyl said at a briefing with several of his Senate colleagues, accusing the Democrats of ignoring their objections.
Senator Bob Bennett said he had no desire to see the new president stumble in his first major legislative effort in Congress.

"As an American I want to see the right thing done regardless of who gets the credit," Bennett said. "I'm going to vote against this package because it won't work."
(What does spending to fight  AIDS, giving government money to the arts ,  and setting up new spending programs have to do with  trying to get a  stimulus bill passed. That is what is in President Obama's bill.)

Senate removes Blagojevich from office

In his first news conference as governor, Pat Quinn compared his situation coming into office to that of Gerald Ford following Richard Nixon after Nixon resigned. (   Senate removes Blagojevich from office)
"(Ford) pointed out that he was not elected by the ballots of the people, so he asked the people of America to confirm his office by their prayers, and I have the same request for the people of Illinois," Quinn said. "This is by far the most trying and difficult time in the history of our state."

He said that aside from sweeping economic problems, the state is facing "an integrity crisis."

"I hope that we can ask for people to come together for a cause that they believe in, and that cause is to protect our state and our democracy and help it move forward," Quinn said, encouraging citizens to "expect the best."

He said all appointed government officials and employees will be under review in his administration. He also said he and his family would reside in the governor’s mansion in Springfield, unlike Blagojevich who kept his home in Chicago.

Referring to the state’s budget crisis as a "morass," he said that would be a top priority in the coming weeks.

"We want to make sure everyone who’s breathing and able bodied has a job in Illinois," Quinn siad. "And we need to put a full-court press on to make sure that Illinois gets every dollar it can from the federal government."

(It is sad when somebody has to be removed from office. However it looks to me like the state leaders in ILL. did the right thing. No one from the President of the USA to a trash man is above the law and that includes a sitting Gov. Lets all pray for the new leader in ILL.)

The Tragedy of Compassionate Conservatism

(Did Compassionate Conservatism fail under President Bush and if so why. That is a question Marvin Olasky  who some credited or discredited with developing takes on in a column. Read part of the column below.)

Governor and then President Bush wanted to fight poverty, alcoholism, addiction, and other social problems. He saw faith-based approaches (from personal experience) as an effective way to do battle. He wanted them to garner additional resources and left the how-to questions to his advisors.

As a volunteer chairman of a Bush task force in 1999, I was pleased when the candidate adopted my proposal for charity tax credits that would be part of a decentralized anti-poverty plan. On July 22, 1999, in his major policy speech regarding compassionate conservatism, he spoke of tax credits, promising that "individuals will choose who conducts this war on poverty—and their support won't be filtered through layers of government officials."

I traveled recently to Indianapolis, where Bush in 1999 gave his policy-setting speech regarding compassionate conservatism, and asked inner-city innovator Tim Streett (WORLD, Dec. 18, 1999) what had changed.

Rick Alvis, chief executive officer: "We thought the federal government was going to come alongside us. Then we started hearing, 'Can you change your program and take out the spiritual angle?'"

The sad part is that Bush staffers have teed up the ball perfectly for the new administration to send taxpayer dollars to Obama supporters at liberal religious groups that swing votes but don't change lives.

(Something that people like Cal Thomas and myself who were some of the few Bible based people who were against the faith based  plan from our last President are now being proved right. If you take money from the government you may have to change what you preach. Instead Bible based ministries and churches should trust in God and not in Uncle Sam. Now I am afraid as Marvin Olasky  warned in his column we are going to see money given to churches from the left who will be glad to take the money even though the message they preach won't change any souls. Bush was trying to do what he thought was right but any time government becomes involved look for trouble. President Reagan was right government is part of the problem not the answer. Read more of the above column The Tragedy of Compassionate Conservatism.)

Watch Gov. Blagojevich's Statement To The Illinois Senate

Right now Gov. Blagojevich is giving a statement at his trial before the Ill. Senate. You can see it live
(Video Viewer)
It sounds so far that the gov. is just talking about what he has done or how wrong it would be to remove him. He has said nothing which proves he didn't do the crime he is charged with. Watch it live or the tapes and see what you think.

Tax Refunds Now on Hold in California

ABC News has learned that tax refunds are now on hold in California for the first time in state history, according to the state controller's office.  ( Tax Refunds Now on Hold in California...   )

"Unfortunately, we have asked the California Franchise Tax Board not to send over tax refund claims beginning today because we will not be able to process them and have them out the door by Feb. 1 when a 30-day delay in tax refunds goes into effect," Hallye Jordan, spokeswoman to California State Controller John Chiang, tells ABC News.

(Those of us who warned that the leader of CA. wasn't  a true conservative are now being proven right. Government needs to cut spending if it is the states or Washington.)

House Votes No on DTV Delay (Breaking News)

The House of Representatives has voted against delaying the February switch to digital television. Earlier this week, the Senate voted in favor of a four-month postponement.  President Obama supports the delay, worrying many people are not ready.  The switch is scheduled February 17th. (   House Votes No on DTV Delay  )

(Good for the House. Why did Obama even become part of this issue. People have been told for over a year about this switch. Also some people watch too much Tv so they might need to be grounded from it. There are more important issues for the government to be involved with. Perhaps Obama is worried that those who voted for him won't be able to see him on TV.)

The Last Sanctity of Life Proclamation?

George W. Bush  knew  and so did all of us that he wasn't going to be  our President January 22, 2009  the anniversary of Roe v Wade. And he knew that his successor certainly wouldn't be mourning all the children murdered  by  abortion , nor would Barack Obama be proclaiming any Sanctity of Life Day.

So Bush grabbed a pen early before leaving office  and signed his final proclamation. The Lord bless him.

Below is part of what Bush said or you can read the whole document   at the Americans United for Life Blog. It might be a good idea to hold on to it.  It is going to be a long time before such a document comes from the  current Oval Office.
Bush:All human life is a gift from our Creator that is sacred, unique, and worthy of protection. On National Sanctity of Human Life Day, our country recognizes that each person, including every person waiting to be born, has a special place and purpose in this world. We also underscore our dedication to heeding this message of conscience by speaking up for the weak and voiceless among us.
Bush: The most basic duty of government is to protect the life of the innocent. My Administration has been committed to building a culture of life by vigorously promoting adoption and parental notification laws, opposing Federal funding for abortions overseas, encouraging teen abstinence, and funding crisis pregnancy programs.
