Hard Times Might Make this Christmas, and Hanukkah Better

Karen Zink, 38,  is a stay-at-home mother of three who approaches Christmas spending with a year-round savings plan and a 7-by-5-inch notebook.

The notebook, which she carries in her purse, includes a detailed list with names of gift recipients, a budgeted amount per person and possible gift ideas. When she buys a present, she writes it down by each person’s name and logs the amount spent.

Karen keeps a running tally of the expenditures to make sure she stays within the budgeted amount that she and her husband, Ron, have agreed on and saved through the year.

Ron, a field service engineer for a medical company, and Karen, who works part time cleaning houses and an office, have been spared major economic hardships related to the economy. But the recession made them think about what could happen, and that was enough to change their ways, said Karen.

About two months ago, the Zinks closedly reviewed their budget again and decided to pay only cash for certain expenses, so they don’t overspend. They also listed items like “going out” for which they typically didn’t track or set aside money.

While they’ve reduced some expenditures, the Zinks still are spending — just more carefully and with a better accounting of it on paper, Karen said.

( A good thing that these hard times might bring is people will watch this holiday how they spend. Too often around Christmas and  Hanukkah  people use money they don't have to buy  gifts that their children or grandchildren  don't need or have too much of. 34,000 troops will be sent...

President Obama will outline Tuesday his intention to send an additional 34,000 U.S. troops to Afghanistan, according to U.S. officials and diplomatic sources briefed Monday as Obama began informing allies of his plan. (34,000 troops will be sent...  )

(President Obama needs to make a strong case for beating those who want us dead. If we   don't win there   not only will Afghanistan   have evil leaders again  but we will be in more danger of  another attack in America that could even be worst than the one on 911. Obama needs to act like he is committed to finishing the job that was started by President Bush.)

NC same-gender adoption case continues

Several organizations are asking the North Carolina Supreme Court to review a lower-court decision permitting same-gender adoption.

(NC same-gender adoption case continues  )

The court ruled in a case involving two lesbians, one of whom is State Senator Julia Boseman (D-New Hanover). Boseman's partner Melissa Jarrell had a baby through artificial insemination and permitted Boseman to adopt the child. Child custody became a factor when the couple split up and the natural mother wanted Boseman, her former partner, out of the picture. The North Carolina Court of Appeals granted custody to Boseman.  "Basically this case just represents the craziness in our laws when we go against God's moral law and open up our courts and our institutions to this kind of ridiculous behavior," notes Barbara Weller of the Christian Law Association.

(This is the kind of thing many of us feared and said would happen if we started to allow same sex marriage. The question here shouldn't be about if  same sex couples have the right to have children but the question should be what would be best for the children. Children need loving parents not those who want to push same sex marriage down our throats. Children having enough issues they shouldn't have to deal with explaining why they have two dads or two moms. )

Prison chaplains facing cuts

Massachusetts may soon lay off its prison chaplains. Those plans could unfold within the next few weeks.

prison cellMark Hemenway of New England Prison Ministries is concerned because the role of prison chaplain is important. "It is -- and it's huge," he stresses. "And if you speak with a chaplain, you'll hear stories of people who were saved from suicide, who were helped from committing acts of violence." The impact of chaplains "is not always apparent, but it's very real," he adds.

(While it might be too bad to see  these workers not be around prisons perhaps we can get some truly Godly chaplains by different Christian Ministries like Good News Jail and prison ministries bringing them in. Not all chaplains know the true God. They might know about God without knowing God. If you are a person of faith join me in praying  that true people of God will be brought into the prisons around the nation.  Read more on this issue Prison chaplains facing cuts.)

Amnesty International pushes same-sex 'marriage'

At the request of a Christian-founded organization, Australia is considering a bill to legalize homosexual "marriage."

The bill before the Australian Senate is being pushed by Amnesty International. Piero Tozzi, executive vice president and general counsel of the Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute (C-FAM), tells OneNewsNow that Amnesty International was originally formed by a Christian mainly to try to free prisoners of conscience behind the Iron Curtain. However, considering the present situation, Tozzi says it seems the group's focus has changed.

"I believe it was in 2006, Amnesty changed its position from neutrality on the abortion issue to favoring abortion," Tozzi reports. "Now they've really come full-circle, and I think betrayed the founding principles."

(This group is  no longer working for Christian based values.  You can't compare the fight for same sex marriage with the fight to   free prisoners of conscience behind the Iron Curtain. People were abused, and even killed because of their faith or political views behind the Iron Curtain. All those who I have heard take a stand against same sex marriage have never pushed for those who want same sex marriage to be put in prison or killed because of it. Principles before GOP politics

The vice chairman of the Republican National Committee (RNC) is promoting a proposed resolution that would warn 2010 GOP candidates that if they do not respect the party's "conservative values," they will not receive the financial backing or endorsement of the RNC.  (Principles before GOP politics )

The "Proposed RNC Resolution on Reagan's Unity Principle for Support of Candidates" was drafted by Jim Bopp, vice chairman of the RNC.  It requires that GOP candidates prove not only with their campaign speeches, but also with their voting record that they embrace at least eight of ten conservative principles (listed below).

Bopp tells OneNewsNow he has yet to get RNC chairman Michael Steele's opinion on his proposal because the resolution was leaked prematurely by "people who are trying to undermine the effort." He says the resolution is designed to ensure the party puts its money where its mouth is.

(This is a great idea. Some of us on the right have been concerned that the Grand Old Party has been forgetting  it's core principles like right to life, a strong America, and less spending of  the tax payer's money. I hope the leadership of the party will follow this idea but I am not sure. Too often the party and some of it's members have been more concerned with being liked than standing on principal. )

Obama dinner crashers shopping interview...

The couple who crashed President Barack Obama's first state dinner are peddling their story to broadcast networks for hundreds of thousands of dollars, a television executive says.

The executive, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the network does not publicly discuss bookings, told The Associated Press that representatives for Michaele and Tareq Salahi contacted networks to urge them to "get their bids in" for an interview. The executive said the Virginia couple was looking for a payment in the mid-six figures range. (Obama dinner crashers shopping interview... )

Meanwhile, CNN confirmed that the Salahis had canceled an appearance they had scheduled for "Larry King Live" on Monday.

Network news divisions say they don't pay for interviews. But for eagerly sought interviews in the past, they have offered to pay for access to exclusive material, such as pictures or videos from their subjects.

(If these souls must be paid to talk to the media every good  TV network- station,  radio network - station, and newspaper should reject their offer. The only ones who should talk to them are those who job it is to guard the President and others at the White House.)

TIGER WOODS CANCELS MEET WITH POLICE... Statement...

Despite presenting his side of the car-crash story and asking that it remain "a private matter," Tiger Woods may still not be in the clear.

Troopers arriving at his Isleworth home requesting an interview were turned down for a third straight day, but the Florida Highway Patrol said it will continue to investigate. Yet the tabloid-fueled rumors now swirling around one of the world's richest and most-recognizable athletes could turn out to be more troublesome still.

About an hour before the troopers arrived Sunday afternoon, Woods released a statement on his Web site taking responsibility for - but providing few details about - the middle-of-the-night accident that left him dazed, bruised and bloodied.

"This is a private matter and I want to keep it that way," Woods said. "Although I understand there is curiosity, the many false, unfounded and malicious rumors that are currently circulating about my family and me are irresponsible. ...

( I hope Tiger along with his wife can work out whatever is taking place in their home. However when the police are called and you are a public person nothing is a private matter. Tiger could stop some of this talk if he would just sit down with the police but for some reason he and his wife won't do that which makes one wonder. Also if the police wanted to talk to you or I do you think we would be allowed to refuse seeing them. Perhaps money and power does help people stay out of jail.  Read more on this story  right here.)
