Dealing with problem gamblers

A man walks into a casino and spends $5 million at a slot machine.

He comes back and spends another $5 million, and then another and another and another.

Is he a compulsive gambler or a rich guy having fun?

If he is a problem gambler, does the casino have a responsibility to protect him from his compulsive behavior?

That's the question at the heart of high roller Terry Watanabe's lawsuit against Harrah's Entertainment and two of its casinos: Caesars Palace and the Rio.

The lawsuit filed by the Omaha philanthropist could have far-ranging consequences for the casino industry in an age when people addicted to smoking, for example, have successfully sued tobacco companies. (Dealing with problem gamblers  )

Watanabe, accused of stiffing the Rio and Caesars Palace for millions of dollars, may or may not have a case.

But the question of whether casinos have a responsibility to intervene on behalf of compulsive gamblers may be ripe for a legal challenge, said William Thompson, a University of Nevada-Las Vegas professor and gambling expert.

Thompson said the industry has “probably been holding its breath'' waiting for a case “where the compulsive gambler has the evidence and it shows the casino has exploited someone with a disease.

(I have a lot of mixed feelings on this case. First off I believe  problem gamblers and their families need help.  I hate what gambling does to men and women along with the damage it does to their families and children. At the same time shouldn't part of the blame be put on the gamblers  because no one is holding  a gun making them gamble. As I posted in another blog earlier today we should hope and pray those who have problems with gambling have a change in their heart and soul. Also we must not forget the impact gambling has on cities. Gambling brings crime and more people needing help. A  Pastor here in Nebraska  who was the head of a mission said some years back when the casinos came to Iowa more souls were coming to the mission for help. So there should be no debate that gambling has hurt America and our culture.)

Nelson not ready to endorse to health care deal

Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Neb., said today that he's not ready to endorse the deal struck late Tuesday on an alternative to the government-run public health insurance option in the Senate health care bill.

"The only thing that our group agreed to last night was to send a proposal to the Congressional Budget Office for financial analysis," Nelson said. "I haven't signed onto the proposal, and I look forward to CBO's financial analysis of how much it'll cost."

He said it remains to be seen whether any proposal can garner the required 60 votes.

"I have a number of concerns that remain unresolved," Nelson said.

A leading liberal — former Democratic Party Chairman Howard Dean — and a much-courted moderate — Connecticut independent Sen. Joe Lieberman — both signaled today that they might be able to live with the compromise, which officials said included:

• Nonprofit national health plans administered by the Office of Personnel Management, which runs the popular federal employees' health plan.

• Opening Medicare to uninsured Americans beginning at age 55, effective in 2011

(I don't know if my concerns are the same ones Nelson holds but he is right to be concerned. Yes changes should be made in health care but just because the water is bad doesn't mean you get rid of the baby that is in the water. Calling a halt to Christmas Day gaming

A campaign is under way, working toward closing casinos and shutting down the lottery on Christmas.

Not only are casinos open, but many stores will be selling lottery tickets on Christmas Day. Les Bernal of Stop Predatory Gambling is asking the public to help put a stop to the government's hunt for dollars belonging to American citizens on a day that is meant to convey a time of peace.

"This is a government program encouraging people to lose their money and to get more into debt -- and they're kind of preying on people's hopes and doing it on Christmas Day," he contends. (Calling a halt to Christmas Day gaming )

( I am not at all for gambling and it would be better if  the places which encourage that behavior were closed but I don't know if closing them for one day would help that much. Still it is better  when gambling is stopped.   Those who take part in gambling need  a change in their heart and soul. Lets hope and pray that happens soon.)

Obama to Republicans: 'Stop trying to frighten the American people

President Barack Obama told House Republican leaders to "stop trying to frighten the American people" even as he and Democrats said they see a possibility for bipartisan cooperation on job creation legislation.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) told reporters that Obama made the admonition during a bipartisan meeting at the White House on Wednesday, producing a chart to show Republicans that "things are a lot better."
Reid and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said there was broad agreement on their side of the aisle about how to create jobs by aiding small businesses and boosting infrastructure spending. Pelosi said she thinks on those issues, "it's possible for us to find some common, bipartisan ground."
But moments later, Republicans made it clear that they want to see a "spending freeze" and a "no-cost" jobs plan that consists largely of tax cuts.

"We can't keep spending money we don't have," House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.) said.

House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) pushed back on Obama's request for an end to Republicans' scare tactics by saying that Obama's policies have led to a hiring freeze, and the GOP is simply telling constituents what is happening.
( I am all for bipartisan. At the same time the Republicans are right to bring up issues that are hurting America and her workers. Read more on this issue Obama to Republicans: 'Stop trying to frighten the American people'... Bipartisan shouldn't mean you stop speaking up. The Democrats didn't have no issues when Bush was President in speaking up but now they want everyone who doesn't see it their way to have their mouths taped shut. Also what about the leader of the Democrats comparing those who are against Obamacare to those who didn't want slavery to end in America. All of you Democrats you can't have your cake while telling others to stop eating their cake.)

Christmas Boycott, and Obama Change

Focus on the Family is worried Christmas is being forgotten.

For the third year in a row, Focus is taking retailers to task for using generic language like “season’s greetings” and “holiday sales” with no reference to “Christmas,” calling the omission an insult to the Christian faith.

But this year Focus has added a twist to its defense of Christmas.

Rather than have Focus staffers decide which retailers are unfriendly to Christmas and publish the results, customers can rate retailers themselves at StandforChristmas.com, a Web site created by Focus.

So is the answer to boycott those who don't say Merry Christmas?

------------------------------------------

Those of you who voted for this BAND OF FAR-LEFT BROTHERS AND SISTERS LAST NOVEMBER is this the change you were voting for?  THE POLLS say  you and America  ARE GETTING a  CHANGE you  HADN'T ANTICIPATED.

To hear more of my thoughts on the above please watch a video I just posted last night Christmas Boycott, Obama Change 12-9-09.avi .

No Christmas in the Government Schools.

The majestic strains of Handel's “Hallelujah” chorus trumpeting from a slide projector seemed out of place.

Amid the legions of public school board members and superintendents — 1,000 from throughout Nebraska — the religious masterwork sounded a discordant note — somewhat like the aroma of beef stew wafting through a PETA convention.

Bent over the projector was Lincoln attorney Neal Stenberg, preparing to deliver some timely advice: Allowing religious music at school programs is OK, as long as you abide by simple rules to keep from running afoul of the U.S. Constitution.

“I think there's a need to remind people it's lawful,” he said.

Every winter, America's educators wrestle with how to deal with the First Amendment's Establishment Clause — commonly interpreted as requiring the separation of church and state — while recognizing the traditions on which the holidays are based.

Although most districts have found a way to balance those interests, fear of lawsuits and confusion about the law have driven some school boards and teachers to cut religious songs unnecessarily from school settings.

Last year, school officials in North Carolina pulled the song “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” from an elementary school winter concert after a parent complained the song contained the words “Santa” and “Christmas.” Widely ridiculed for their decision, school officials then reversed themselves.

In a backlash against such bans, a Redding, Calif., substitute teacher is gathering signatures on a petition that would require the state's public schools to let students listen to or perform Christmas music.

Despite confusion about the use of religious music in schools, Stenberg said, courts have upheld its constitutionality.

When schools use religious music, however, the objectives must be secular, he said.

“It's important to understand the distinction between teaching religious music for a secular purpose and trying to inculcate some religious value through the use of music. The former is lawful, the latter is not,” he said.

(It is too bad and sad that leaders in the government schools must worry about what they can or can't do. This might be another reason  to put your children in faith based schools or educate them at home. The Bible today is not allowed in these schools along with the true message of Christmas. So could that be why we have  drugs, crimes against students and teachers taking place at higher and higher rates. Read more on this issue by  clicking right here.)

Obama to Accept Peace Prize as 30k Troops Deploy...

There is a bit of irony that just 10 days after announcing the deployment of 30,000 more American troops to Afghanistan, President Obama will accept the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize tomorrow in Oslo, Norway.

The award, which the Nobel committee said was for Obama's "extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples," comes as he presides over wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and faces an American public that is increasingly skeptical about the U.S.-led efforts there.

Obama will walk a delicate line in his acceptance speech.

(This was a political move by those who decided to give Obama the Nobel Peace Prize. There is no way they would have given the Nobel to Bush or anyone on the right. This also shows how those around the world love Obama but among Americans his numbers keep falling. Read more of the above story Obama to Accept Peace Prize as 30k Troops Deploy.)

Woman will fight flag case

An attorney for a Kansas woman accused of violating Nebraska’s flag-desecration law has lost the latest round in a fight to invalidate what he believes is an unconstitutional statute.

Attorney Bassel El-Kasaby said Monday that despite the Nebraska Supreme Court’s recent decision to dismiss his appeal, the legal battle he’s waging on behalf of Shirley Phelps-Roper will continue.

Phelps-Roper was accused in 2007 of letting her then-10-year-old son stand on an American flag at the funeral of a National Guardsman in Bellevue. Authorities also say she wore a flag as a skirt that dragged on the ground.

She is a member of the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan., whose members believe U.S. troop deaths are punishment for the nation’s tolerance of homosexuality.

Besides being accused of violating the flag law, which is a misdemeanor, she also was charged with disturbing the peace, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and negligent child abuse stemming from the protest.

Phelps-Roper, who has previously denied violating any law, said she once saw the case as a battle to uphold the right to free speech. Today its outcome is of little consequence when the nation’s destruction is imminent, she said.

“Each day that that case lingers, there’s just more wrath upon this nation,” she said.

(I hope this lady will lose in her fight but what is more troubling is that she tells others she is just following God and doing his will. I don't know her heart or where she is with the Lord but I know based on the Bible I read she is not for one second speaking for the Lord. Read more on this news item Woman will fight flag case.)

Nelson Fails to Add Abortion Limits to Health Bill

The U.S. Senate refused to add stricter limits on abortion funding to health-care legislation, jeopardizing Nebraska Democrat Ben Nelson’s support for the overall plan.

The Senate voted 54-45 to reject Nelson’s amendment. While he said his proposal would simply preserve the prohibition on federal funding of abortion, opponents argued it would discourage insurance companies from covering the procedure. ( Nelson Fails to Add Abortion Limits to Health Bill )

(As I posted yesterday more was needed than this to keep abortion out of the health care bill. However now the question is will Sen. Nelson now keep his word and not vote for health care. No matter what  if  government health care becomes the law of the land Sen. Nelson must take some of the blame because he voted for a bad bill in hopes of changing it. I do hope Nelson will keep his word and put  the right to life ahead of his party. I don't believe most Americans including those who support abortion support  tax money being used to pay for them.)

Star Wars Concert Goes On In the Snow

(As I posted yesterday here in Omaha, Nebraska  we had some bad weather that brought about school closings. Check out the post I did Snow Day . Well one thing was not called off. I have posted part of the story below.)

There was much anticipation for the "Star Wars: In Concert" at the Qwest Center Tuesday night. But it wasn't without controversy since the show went on despite the weather. C3PO told the crowd at the beginning of the show, "Thank you for braving the elements."

For some families, the force toppled the fierce snowstorm. The O'Connor family lives in West Omaha but rented a room downtown around lunchtime to beat the snow and be there for the show. "The kids couldn't miss it," says John O'Connor.

"It would be devastating to say that you could come and then not be able to," says Lesley Royal. "And some of the adults are just as bad."

But there are many who stayed away and believe the dark side won this time.

'Star Wars: In Concert' is part of a national touring company with a tight schedule. Officials sympathize with the fans but say rules are rules. No refunds. No exchanges.

(I understand why they have the rule they have but  our local news was telling people to stay off of the roads and yet they won't refund the money of people who decided to be safe instead of putting them and their children in danger. However what I find more troubling is what the parent said above that it would devastating to a child to miss the show. I  know a child might not be happy if they missed the show. However there are lots of other things that would be more devastating  such as a parent or a love one  dieing, their parents getting a divorce, a sibling have a terrible illness. Also I think being in a car crash because of the weather might be something parents should worry about more than telling a child they won't be able to attend a show.
