Healthcare bill 'may not make it'

The big question in Washington, DC, remains:  Will healthcare legislation pass in the Senate before lawmakers head home for Christmas?

A week before Christmas, Senate Democrats are still struggling to find 60 votes for their massive healthcare reform bill.

Brian Darling, director of Senate relations for The Heritage Foundation, says although the situation is still in flux, he believes there will be a vote in the Senate on the healthcare bill before Christmas. ( Healthcare bill 'may not make it' )

"It seems like moment to moment the landscape changes," Darling notes.  "You had [Senate Majority Leader] Harry Reid announcing a big deal late last week, and so it appeared that the bill was going to pass.

The Heritage spokesman says the only way the Democrats can get the bill passed is if they make all of their caucus happy -- which to date has been an elusive goal.

(Watch for Sen. Reid, President Obama, and other  leaders from the Democrats to try give the farm   to people like Sen. Nelson to get his support. Let us pray whatever it takes may Obamacare not become the law of the land.)

San Francisco challenged on 'Catholic bashing'

A decision concerning a lawsuit filed against San Francisco for bashing Catholics will be reached within the next few months.

The case challenges a resolution given by the Board of Supervisors of the city and county which essentially condemns the Catholic Church for its moral beliefs, especially those in relation to homosexuality and adoption of children by homosexuals. (San Francisco challenged on 'Catholic bashing' )

Robert Muise of the Thomas More Law Center argued the case on the basis of the Establishment Clause of the U.S. Constitution, which forbids Congress from establishing a state religion and prevents hostility toward religion.

(Today no group can be bashed but those of us of faith. Jesus did tell us  people would hate us because we know him at the same time government will not  take part in perception on anyone or any group unless it is a person of faith.)

Franken Shuts Down Lieberman on Senate Floor

Democratic Sen. Al Franken took the unusual step Thursday of shutting down Sen. Joe Lieberman on the Senate floor.

Franken was presiding over the Senate Thursday afternoon as Lieberman spoke about amendments he planned to offer to the bill.

"In my capacity as the senator from Minnesota, I object," Franken said.

Franken's spokeswoman, Jess McIntosh, said that the Minnesota senator wouldn't allow Lieberman to continue because time limits were being enforced by Senate leaders rushing to finish a defense spending bill and get to the health bill.

(So lets rush everything for the sakye of health care never mind if we are rude. Read more of the above story Franken Shuts Down Lieberman on Senate Floor.)

Cal Thomas and Bob Beckel Christmas- Holiday Gifts

Sarah Palin? Check. Tiger Woods? Yep. Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid? There’s something for them, too. Even  Cheney makes his way onto Cal and Bob’s holiday shopping list.

Today: Holiday gifts.

Cal: It's that most wonderful time of the year again, Bob, as the tinny music blaring from the shopping mall speakers reminds us. So let's play Santa and spread Christmas cheer to our favorite — or not-so-favorite — politicians and celebrities. My first gift, wrapped in a nice bow, goes to Tiger Woods. It's a week of marriage counseling, courtesy of Dr. Phil. And to Tiger's wife, Elin, goes an electronic bracelet. Not for her, but so that she can keep track of her philandering husband.

Bob: That's a tough beginning, Cal, so in that spirit let me award the Republicans in Congress a very large stop sign, symbolic of their continuing opposition to everything President Obama has proposed. In my 30 years in Washington, I have never seen a more polarizing, politically conniving, party-first/country-last crowd than the members of the GOP in the Senate and the House.

Cal: Books always make nice gifts. So I'm going to deliver a leatherbound U.S. history text to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who had the gall to equate Republican opposition to the health care bill with those who supported slavery and opposed the Civil Rights Act. If Reid reads the book, he'll learn that Republican Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation and Southern Democrats led the opposition to civil rights. And to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, I'll give her a year of flights on Southwest Airlines so she can mingle with the public she was elected to serve rather than traversing the country on government jets.

(The above is part of a USA Today column written by Cal Thomas and Bob  Beckel.    Continue reading "Column: Gifts for the naughty and nice among us " ».)

Christmas Vote on Health Care!

A moderate Democrat whose vote could be crucial said Thursday an attempted Senate compromise on abortion is unsatisfactory, raising doubts about whether the chamber can pass President Barack Obama's health care overhaul by Christmas.

"As it is, without modifications, the language concerning abortion is not sufficient," Nebraska Sen. Ben Nelson, a key holdout on the health care bill, said in a statement after first making his concerns known to Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.

Nelson said there were positive improvements dealing with teen pregnancy and adoption, and that he was open to further negotiations. But in a radio interview earlier in the day with KLIN in Lincoln, Nebraska, Nelson also said that abortion wasn't his only concern and he didn't see how the Christmas deadline was achievable.

The development came with Senate leaders working round the clock trying to finalize their 10-year, nearly $1 trillion bill in time for a final vote on Christmas Eve. Nelson is emerging as a major obstacle - perhaps the only remaining one - since Democrats need his vote to have the 60 necessary to overcome Republican stalling tactics.

(This is an outrage. At a time of the year when people are thinking about when the Lord came and how he brings peace into the hearts and souls of his followers, the Senate is going to vote on health care. My guess is this is a political move. Sen. Reid and the Democrats are thinking if they change the best health care system in the world on Christmas Eve no one be watching. Sen. Reid and others in his party including the President have the attitude that a bad bill is better than no bill. This vote and the debate should not be rushed or cut short. Shame on the Democrats!) Lets hope that they fail. Read more on this story DEMS PLANS CHRISTMAS EVE VOTE ON HEALTH!)

Does Sen. Ben Nelson Stand in the Way of Health Care Victory

For 36 years, the controversial Roe v. Wade decision set the ground rules for abortion law in the United States, but the issue has continued to simmer beneath the political surface. With the momentum to get a health care bill passed by the end of the year, it is now threatening to boil over and derail the health care legislation, and one senator is leading the helm -- Ben Nelson of Nebraska.

"The compromise adds important new initiatives addressing teen pregnancy and tax credits to help with adoptions," Nelson said Thursday in a written statement, referring to a compromise offered by a fellow anti-abortion Democrat, Sen. Bob Casey of Pennsylvania. "These are valuable improvements that will make a positive difference and promote life. But as it is, without modifications, the language concerning abortion is not sufficient." (See more of this story  Does Sen. Ben Nelson Stand in the Way of Health Care Victory.)

(All of us who care about the unborn should hope that Nelson stays strong but as posted yesterday it is not only abortion that should concern Sen. Nelson. There are  lots of other things in this bill  that would hurt America. Check out the posting I did yesterday, Harkin: Health bill in Nelson's hands.)

Harkin: Health bill in Nelson's hands

Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, said today the health care bill is now in the hands of Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Neb.

Another holdout, Independent Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut, has warmed to the legislation after Democratic leaders agreed to drop both a new government health insurance plan, called the public option, and a proposal to expand Medicare.

"That kind of leaves Mr. Nelson, Senator Nelson, as the last man standing here," Harkin said during a conference call with reporters.

Unless they can find a Republican senator to support the bill, Democrats need every single member of their caucus to stand united to reach the 60 votes necessary to break a filibuster and move the bill forward.

"We’re all working with Ben to try to get him to be our 60th vote," Harkin said.

(Those of us who care about the unborn, keeping taxes down, and keeping  the best health care system in the world should hope that Nelson doesn't cave to his party. If Nelson cares about  what is best for his state of  Nebraska and America he shouldn't cave in to his party. I am glad he is standing for the unborn but there is so much wrong with this bill besides abortion as bad as that is. Read more on this issue Harkin: Health bill in Nelson's hands.)

Same Sex Marriage Debate is getting Close to Ending

Washington, D.C.'s City Council has voted to legalize homosexual marriage.

As expected, the final vote was 11 to 2, and Matt Barber, director of cultural affairs for Liberty Counsel, says, "It's very unfortunate that they would choose to brazenly circumvent the will of the people in order to push something on Washington, D.C. that the people reject - and that is counterfeit same-sex marriage."

The city's Election Board refused to put the issue on a future ballot to allow the people to decide. Congress now has 30 days to review and take action to override the vote, but Barber feels the liberal tone of Washington precludes that happening. However, he believes that the public could still send a message.

(It is too bad  that these leaders didn't follow the will of the people. At the same time we are never going to get family values from those at the top. America needs a  spiritual and moral change. It also has hurt our cause that there are so many divorces among those who claim to believe    in traditional marriage.   Cal Thomas touched on this yesterday in a radio commentary listen to what Cal said  mp3 . CEO of Christian doctors' group quits AMA

Dr. David Stevens is the CEO of the CMA, which is the largest faith-based medical association, and he tells OneNewsNow that he is dropping his membership with the American Medical Association because its members are controlled by special interests.

"We've seen this in the healthcare reform debate as AMA went to meet secretly with Senate leaders to bargain for higher physician Medicare reimbursement in exchange for support of healthcare reform legislation," he explains. "The purpose of doctors is to have a covenant relationship with their patients. You do what's best for the patient, not what's best for your pocketbook. (CEO of Christian doctors' group quits AMA  )

(Good for this doctor. Based on what I know and have heard the AMA doesn't speak for most doctors. )

Public option - a healthcare smokescreen

A healthcare reform expert says even though some liberals are wavering in their support for the current Senate healthcare bill, the modified measure is still extremely dangerous.

Grace-Marie Turner, president of the Galen Institute, says she believed all along that Democrats' promotion of the public option was merely a smokescreen to divert attention away from other disturbing aspects of the bill.

"This bill still has huge, huge problems," says Turner. "It still is going to increase healthcare costs for not only the federal government, but for the average American family."

Turner notes that in addition to taxpayer funding of abortion, the bill also includes half-a-trillion dollars in new taxes on businesses and individuals, and half-a-trillion in cuts to the Medicare program.

(We must work and pray that this bill doesn't pass. If it does pass we must work to see those who supported it are removed from office the next election. Read more on this issue  right here.)

And as far as individuals are concerned, the healthcare expert says "they're not only going to be required to buy this expensive new government health insurance, but they're going to be fined on their taxes if they don't -- and in the House bill, they can be thrown in jail."

Graham speaks truth about Islam

A messianic Jewish leader is pleased that evangelist Franklin Graham continues to tell the truth about Islam and won't buckle to the demands of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR).

Recently Graham was interviewed by CNN's Campbell Brown who asked the evangelist about comments he made in 2001 when he referred to Islam as "a very evil and wicked religion."

Graham did not back down from that assessment. Instead he replied that "true Islam cannot be practiced in this country. You can't beat your wife. You cannot murder your children if you think they've committed adultery or something like that, which they do practice in these other countries," he explained. "I don't agree with the teachings of Islam, and I find it to be a very violent religion."

Jan Markell, founder and director of Olive Tree Ministries, argues that Franklin simply spoke the truth as "there are very few people who are willing.

(Good for Graham. We do need more leaders including spiritual ones who are willing to speak the truth about Islam. We are  told again and again Islam is a peaceful faith. If it is so peaceful explain to me why do we have followers of Islam committing the acts that Graham listed. Read more on this issue Graham speaks truth about Islam.)

(Evangelist Oral Roberts dies in Calif. at age 91

Evangelist Oral Roberts, who rose from tent revivals to found a multimillion-dollar organization and an Oklahoma university bearing his name, has died. He was 91.

His spokesman A. Larry Ross said by phone from Carrollton, Texas, that Roberts died Tuesday of complications from pneumonia in Newport Beach, Calif.

By the 1960s and '70s, the Oklahoma-born Roberts was reaching millions around the world.

Evangelist Billy Graham, who just turned 91 himself in early November, describes Roberts as "a man of God and a great friend in ministry."  During a telephone conversation a few weeks ago Roberts told Graham  "he was near the end of his life's journey." The respected evangelist says he looks forward to the day he will see Roberts again in heaven. (Evangelist Oral Roberts dies in Calif. at age 91 )

(I didn't always agree with how Roberts did things and thought his focus was too much on healing but he was a man of God who was used by the holy spirit. May God's grace and knowing  Roberts is truly home now give his love ones  peace.)
