A newly released survey reveals Protestants rank fourth in knowledge of religion
behind atheists, agnostics, Jews, and Mormons. The survey, released Tuesday by
the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life, aimed to test a broad range of
religious knowledge, including understanding of the Bible, core teachings of
different faiths, and major figures in religious history. (

Mark Tooley, president of the
Institute on Religion & Democracy, says he isn't surprised
at the ranking of Protestants in the survey's findings.

"I
suspect it's not anything new that even many Protestants don't readily know who
Martin Luther was," he offers. "And of course churches need to do a better job,
not just in terms of preaching the most important message, which is salvation in
Jesus Christ, and the specific traditions of their faith -- but also more
broadly the history of their tradition and religion overall."
