In 1863, then-President Abraham Lincoln purposed to set aside a day to give
thanks and praise to God. In his October 3
proclamation, Lincoln said Thanksgiving should be a day of
"offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him…with humble penitence for our
national perverseness and disobedience."

they come. (
Abraham
Lincoln: Give thanks to God)

"America
has been sown with the seed of the gospel, watered by the blood of patriots,
cultivated by the hands of people who use God's Word as their guide and now
protected by the lives of our magnificent military," he decides. "And as a
result, God has brought forth a bountiful harvest of faith, family and freedom
that we've enjoyed for generations. I mean, it's amazing to me."
