The Act Of Giving… Good For Your Health

Richard Brown, a writer for LiveWellNebraska.com,talked about some of his own random acts of kindness that he has initiated during the Christmas holiday season over the years.

He talked about buying movie tickets for people standing in line behind him at the theater, giving money to young mothers with small children to buy Christmas presents, and so on. But what Brown really wanted to discuss was how good he felt after performing his “good deed for the day”. He tried to do every kind act anonymously just for the satisfaction of trying to help his fellow man.

He read a remarkable story recently about a 35 year old woman who had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis two years before. After many treatments, many drugs, and the start of failing health she took the advice of a friend and decided to try this remedy: give away 29 gifts in 29 days.

She felt better after one day. After the 14th day, she stopped using her cane and noticed that she felt better almost every day. By the time the 29 days had gone by she had experienced an amazing recovery. Her name is Cami Walker and her website is “29gifts.org

'Pot' pop in the works

soft drink soda colaA California man plans to create a line of soda that will supply medical marijuana shops with a variety of pot-infused soft drinks, but an anti-marijuana advocate continues to point out that the drug is unsafe.

With Canna Cola flavors like Doc Weed, Grape Ape, Sour Diesel and Orange Kush, soft drink creator Clay Butler wants to stock medical marijuana dispensaries with his pot-infused sodas. The beverages contain THC, the main psychoactive substance found in a cannabis plant.

In response, James L. Lambert of MarijuanaHarmsFamilies.com points out that pushers of pot want to make the drug more palatable for consumers.

James Lambert"The creative pot dealer is looking for different ways of delivering his drug of preference to the public," he explains. "Whether it's in the form of a drink...a candy or a cake, they'll do it, however it happens."

(Billy's Thoughts>>> Lets hope this doesn't happen. The people who drink pop the most are teenagers and kids.

'Gays' in military - force it, then move on

Barack Obama is anxious to start his re-election campaign -- thus the push to implement the new policy allowing homosexuals to serve openly in the military, says a watchdog group.

An advocate for America's fighting men and women is appalled that the Obama Pentagon is rolling a plan today that will give the military services about three months to indoctrinate their personnel on the new law that will inject open homosexuality into the military with zero tolerance of those who object.  ('Gays' in military - force it, then move on )

POLITICIAN BLASTS LIMBAUGH: DON'T MOCK COMMUNIST CHINESE LEADER!

Rush Limbaugh's imitation of the Chinese language during a recent speech made by Chinese President Hu Jintao has stirred a backlash among Asian-American lawmakers in California and nationally.

California state Sen. Leland Yee, a Democrat from San Francisco, is leading a fight in demanding an apology from the radio talk show host for what he and others view as racist and derogatory remarks against the Chinese people. (POLITICIAN BLASTS LIMBAUGH: DON'T MOCK COMMUNIST CHINESE LEADER! )

In recent days, the state lawmaker has rallied civil rights groups in a boycott of companies like Pro Flowers, Sleep Train and Domino's Pizza that advertise on Limbaugh's national talk radio show.

Rolling on after car crash

Gina Giaffoglione tumbles with the punches.

As a child, if she argued with a friend, she tumbled until she was happy again. If she had a bad day at school, she tumbled to forget what happened. If a relationship ended, she tumbled to ease the pain. (Rolling on after car crash)

After high school, Giaffoglione moved to Wayne to attend Wayne State College. She eventually opened a studio in Wayne.

After having a few drinks one night in March 2008, Giaffoglione and two friends decided to take a sports cars for a spin. Because it was designed for two, Giaffoglione sat on the lap of the man in the passenger seat.

Egged on by Giaffoglione and the other passenger, the driver pushed the car to 80 mph in a 25 mph speed zone. Then the driver lost control and crashed. Giaffoglione was thrown from the car and broke her back.

She spent a week in a Sioux City, Iowa, hospital, then went to Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha for more treatment and therapy. Shortly before the Fourth of July, she asked her doctor if he knew of anyone with a broken back such as hers who had ever walked again.

He told her no..

After that meeting, I moped around for a while. Then I woke up and determined I would walk again,” she said.

Giaffoglione's first step took her back to Wayne. In October 2008, she returned to continue her education and get a degree in counseling. But Giaffoglione wanted to get back to more than homework.

“I wanted to get the tumbling program started again,” she said.

Her class sizes swelled quickly. Now she teaches around 50 children ages 4 to 15. From her wheelchair, Giaffoglione offers directions, positions feet and arms and fine-tunes moves. Two high school girls are Giaffoglione's “legs.”

Chinese Tiger Mother

Over the years, I have been called every name in the book, all related to my admittedly traditional parenting philosophy. Draconian is a favorite slur. I am confident that these epithets are tossed by folks who have turned their children into golden calves, so I have no problem with harsh or evil or “parenting Hitler” or any of the rest.

But my reputation may be in store for rehabilitation, because according to Amy Chua, writing in The Wall Street Journal (January 11), my parenting malevolence is nothing compared to that of the Chinese Tiger Mother, of which she is one. Consider that the CTM does not allow her children to attend sleepovers, have playdates, participate in school plays, watch television, play computer games, choose their own extracurricular activities, be less than the very best in every subject save drama and gym, attend sleepover camp, and play any instrument other than the piano or violin, of which they will play one or the other.

I conclude that future Chinese orchestras will be bereft of horn and percussion sections. I also ponder the competitive chaos that must result if several children of CTMs wind up in the same classroom. Ms. Chua believes that one does not become proficient to the point of superior at a skill without hours and hours of forced practice. Practice must, in fact, be forced because as she admits, “the child will resist.” Left to their own devices, she claims, children never want to work, which is why it is crucial for responsible (presumably) parents “to override their preferences.
Ms. Chua overrides her two daughters’ preferences by calling them names like “garbage” and threatening to throw away a favorite dollhouse unless the child in question learns a particularly difficult piano piece within 24 hours. If one of her daughters ever came home with a B (something she says would never happen), there would be a “screaming, hair-tearing explosion.” From her, mind you, not the child.
At the crux of my disagreement with Ms. Chua is her definition of success. She’s fixated on grades and other material accomplishments (one of her daughters played Carnegie Hall in 2007). I want a child to pretty much—with some coaching and correcting of course—find his or her own way in life. I’m all for the child learning through trial-and-error what path is right for her. Ms. Chua is about choosing the child’s path and keeping her on it no matter what. I think character is more important than material success. Ms. Chua believes character is forged in the struggle for material success. We agree on nothing.
(Billy's Thoughts>>> The above is part of a column written by   Family psychologist John Rosemond. John is right character should matter more than things and you should never call your child garbage. That is a fornm of abuse. If you like read the whole column 1/19/11.).).)

Jack LaLanne obituary: Jack LaLanne dies at 96; spiritual father ...

This news should also show us no matter how well one lives we will all die and face the creator. Jack has now faced God. I hope he was ready according to God's terms. )

Elton John feels like a second class citizen

Sir Elton John is "fed up" with being a treated like a "second-class citizen" in the U.S. That's why the 63-year-old gay singer said he took a stand last week during a performance at a private Beverly Hills fundraiser for the ongoing legal challenge to California's gay marriage ban.

The outspoken British piano man, who became a parent to a baby boy on Christmas Day with partner David Furnish, added that "as I get older, I get more angry about it."

"In this country, we need more dialogue," he said during an interview Friday. "We don't need any more stone throwing. We don't need any more vitriol. We need people to say, 'OK. I'm straight. You're gay. Let's get along. I'm Republican. You're Democratic. Let's work together.' I'm sick and tired of people being hateful to each other in this country. ( Elton John feels like a second class citizen )

(Billy's Thoughts>>> No the outrage is that some people would try to rear a child without a dad or mom. Children need both.
