Roman Catholic bishops have traditionally adopted a strong stance
against assisted suicide, but faculty members at some Catholic schools have not
necessarily followed in those footsteps.
Patrick Reilly, president and CEO of The Cardinal Newman Society, says: "There are several
professors -- certainly a clear minority -- but there are a number of professors
at Catholic colleges, particularly Jesuit universities, who have been for years
advocating for assisted suicide and been instrumental in the assisted-suicide
movement in helping with amicus briefs and in other ways, advocating for laws
that would legalize it."
Reilly says while an argument can be made for
academic freedom, adherence to school doctrine is essential for its professors.
